Cookie
- A piece of information sent by a Web server to a user's browser. (A
Web server is the computer that "hosts" a Web site, and responds to requests
from a user's browser.) Cookies may include information such as login
or registration identification, user preferences, online "shopping cart"
information, etc. The browser saves the information, and sends it back
to the Web server whenever the browser returns to the Web site. The Web
server may use the cookie to customize the display it sends to the user,
or it may keep track of the different pages within the site that the user
accesses. Browsers may be configured to alert the user when a cookie is
being sent, or to refuse to accept cookies. Some sites, however, cannot
be accessed unless the browser accepts cookies. |

Data
Transfer - Data transfer is defined as any item (graphic, sound, html,
file or database file) that is delivered from your account on the Hosting
web server to a visitor through your web pages. If size of your web page
is 10Kb, each time this page is downloaded by a web browser, 10K of the
data transfer quota is used. If this were an account, with a quota of
5 GB of data transfer, this page would have to be called from the web
500,000 times in the month to reach its quota. |

Disk
Space - (Data Storage) is the actual amount of hard drive storage
space a host is selling you. Most web sites use only a few Megabytes of
space. If you figure that the most space a page should use is 100 KB,
multiply the number of pages you want time 100 and you have the amount
of disk space needed. Example: 10 pages X 100 KB each = 1000 KB or 1 MB.
Having plenty of storage is important as you grow. It is wise to
have at least 5 times your initial space needs, to allow for future expansion
of your site. |

Domain
Name - A domain name is necessary in order to set up a web site. All
domains are registered with Network Solutions, along with a special number
called an I.P. Address (Internet Protocol). This serves the same function
as a postal mailing address, only this is strictly for the Internet. Some
people confuse a Domain Name with the URL (Universal Resource Locator)
of a website. Examples: The URL of this page is - http://www.lakedesigner.com/definitions.htm
My domain name is - lakedesigner.com. You can see the difference & similarity.

Email
Alias Accounts (Forwarding Accounts) - For doteasy hosting customers,
you can establish additional mail forwarding accounts. A common use for
these accounts is to publish an address of info@yourcompany.com which
is actually forwarded to jsmith@yourcompany.com or to any other email
address on the Internet. |
 |
Firewall
- Hardware or software that secures computer files by blocking unauthorized
access. |
|
|
FTP
- FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. A very common method of moving
files between two Internet sites. FTP is a special way to login to another
Internet site for the purposes of retrieving and/or sending files. Used
to upload and download your website between your own computer and the
server. |

Hosting
(also known as Web hosting, Web site hosting, and Webhosting) is the business
of housing, serving, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites.
More important than the computer space that is provided for Web site files
is the fast connection to the Internet. Most hosting services offer connections
on T-carrier system lines (T1 or T3 lines; the equivalent of 24 or 72
individual phone lines) costing from $1200/month and up. This would be
too expensive for most individual business owners. Using a hosting service
lets many companies share the cost of a fast Internet connection for serving
web based files. |

HTML(Hypertext
Markup Language) - The coded format language used for creating hypertext
